Travel: Touristy London!

Hello! Cheers! I'm still trying to get the hang of this...

Anyway, in case you missed it, I'm living in London now! This semester, I'll be studying at the London College of Fashion, located right in the heart of this historic and metropolitan city. Over the next three months, I'll transition from tourist to Londoner (hopefully) as I explore and find my place in this crazy city!

But for now, I am most definitely still a tourist. My family joined me on my journey across the pond, and we decided to make a nice vacation out of their week here, squeezing in every bit of classic London that we could handle. For me, the highlight was definitely seeing Stonehenge. When I was last in London, I didn't leave the city, so I never made it out to Stonehenge. But this time around, visiting this 5,000 year old monument was our top priority. Located about 2 hours outside of London, Stonehenge is oddly positioned in a present-day army town, so while in images it appears to be quite isolated and serene, it's actual located right off of a main road and helicopters can frequently be seen flying overhead.

It used to be that you could walk right up and touch the stones, but in recent years they've added a perimeter to protect the structure. I was quite surprised by the size of the stones. About a third of each stone is actually underground, so you can only imagine how massive these rocks must be.

Another highlight of our adventure was an amazing bike tour of the hot spots of London. With the London Bike Company, we rode all around the city, visiting everything from Big Ben to Buckingham Palace, and Covent Garden to Trafalgar Square. We Applebaums LOVE bike tours; it's pretty much the best way to see a big city in the quickest way possible, and who doesn't love some exercise!

Catch us in the Bergen Record Sunday Travel Section, coming soon!

Not quite the McGraw Clocktower, but it will do for now...

We also had the chance to meet up with my cousin Caitlin and her fiancee Jake, and we made our way to Abbey Road for the iconic Beatles picture!

We had to stop traffic, but I think we nailed it.

I'm glad I took care of all the touristy stuff as soon as I got here. It's kinda crazy to think that all my life, I've grown up so close to Manhattan and yet I've never seen the typical tourist attractions there (Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, etc). I guess it's easy to take for granted the things that are so accessible. Even though London is my home for the next few months, this city is so massive that I imagine I will still feel like a tourist even in April. But, I am so happy to be here learning and exploring!
