Eats: Bernheim and Schwartz

December 27, 2015

A couple of weeks ago, my brother was accepted early decision to Columbia University! I'm so proud and excited for him! Since his acceptance, I've been dying to see the campus, so my family visited the school today to show me around. Even though it was a gloomy day in the city, Columbia is absolutely gorgeous! Aside from all the really great academic programs and awesome facilities, what really makes this school amazing is that the cafe in the engineering building carries Doughnut Plant (Cornell, please take notes!!).

I was especially excited to visit Columbia today because I'm totally unfamiliar with Morningside Heights, the neighborhood of the city in which it is located.  The vibe is a perfect combination of Upper East Side calm and West Village trendy. For lunch, we picked a place that reflected this unique ambiance: Bernheim and Schwartz. This modern pub-style restaurant has a versatile menu including omelets, salads, burgers, and mac n' cheese.

Our meals were satisfying and delicious. The portion sizes were huge, and for a Manhattan restaurant, the prices were very fair. I ordered one of the specials, the Jalapeño Cheddar Turkey Burger.  It was spicy, as expected, but the sweet onion topping perfectly balanced the flavor. I also really liked the cranberry ketchup; it was so unique.  My father ordered an Ahi Tuna Burger, which he described as light and tasty. The homemade coleslaw also gave it a special sweetness that went very well with the sesame seed topping. My mother ordered a grilled chicken sandwich, which was both juicy and tender. She really liked that it was on sourdough bread, which gave it a flavorful twist! My brother described his Veggie Burger as very flavorful! Almost every meal on the menu included a side of fries (which were a little too salty for my liking, but still yummy!)  I would 100% recommend this eatery. With such a large menu, there are options that can satisfy everyone's taste buds, and the service was super friendly! I'm looking forward to eating there again soon!

xo!
