Product Review: Lifeproof Fre Case

It's a normal sunny day, and you're walking on the hot pavement. You've just parked your car, and as you head in to the nail salon, you check your Instagram feed while swinging your car keys in your other hand. You're happily strolling without a care in the world, and then... it happens.

All of a sudden, everything is moving in slow motion. Your world begins to fall apart as a giant, anxious pit in your stomach suddenly appears.

You know the feeling.

You've just dropped your iPhone.

You stand in disbelief for a short moment. How did this happen? Did it break? It couldn't have... it never breaks, right?

You begin praying to God, Ashton Kutcher, and whatever other holy powers come to mind. Please, please let my screen still be intact.

It's time for the moment of truth. You bend down and feel the heat of the gravel against your knees. You reach for your phone, pause dramatically, and flip it over.

And that's when you see the spider web cracks all across your screen.

Well, your day just got a whole lot worse. And now instead of getting a manicure (you were finally going to choose that gorgeous Bikini So Teeny blue from Essie!!), you're heading to the Apple Store.

Cracked iPhones are a part of life, but they had never been a part of my life until a few days ago, when I suffered this awful fate. I'm a big believer in karma, so as I drove to the Apple Store, I racked my brain for possible scenarios that would have justified my iPhone cracking, but I was unable to come up with anything!

Two hours and $109 later, I had a repaired phone, but a broken heart. I knew I could not let this happen again. It was time to swallow my pride and buy a LifeProof case.

If you know me, you're probably laughing right now, because I am the queen of funky phone cases. Ask my roommate; I literally bought a new case every month last year. From a plastic case filled with 24 karat gold to a blue case covered in rhinestone flamingos, I've had my share of fun iPhone covers. But now, I've decided to settle down with a black LifeProof Fre Case for iPhone 6 (it was hard for me to resist the bubblegum pink case, but I'm trying to be more practical now that I'm older & wiser).

I didn't know much about the LifeProof case before purchasing it, but I knew it had good reviews and was pretty protective. For about $70, I was willing to shield my phone from any future harm. LifeProof makes four major promises for this phone case; they claim it is waterproof, dirt proof, snow proof, and drop proof. It's sealed very tightly, so it's nearly impossible for dust, dirt, or snow to enter this case. Additionally, it can be dropped from 6.6 feet or submerged 6.6 feet deep in water for 1 hour without damage. It's the #1 selling waterproof case, and it also provides a 1-year warranty.

The case itself consists of a black plastic cover and a rubber bumper surrounding the edges of the phone. There is a plastic protective layer over the screen and the home button. The Touch-ID feature does work through this plastic, which is SO awesome! In addition, there is a plug that protects the headphone port and a flap that secures the charging port. Assembling this case is extremely easy, even for a less-than-expert on technology like me!

I initially expected to have an issue with the bulkiness of this case, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that this case is actually quite slim. It looks very professional and simple, and I now feel very comfortable knowing that it's protecting my precious device. In the few days that I have had this case, it has stayed completely dirt free! I have yet to drop it, but I am sure that it will live up to its "drop proof" promise. I will say that the waterproof function is pretty awesome. While I don't plan on diving into 6.6 feet of water any time soon, it's nice to be able to use my phone near my sink or while I'm drinking water without constantly worrying about damaging my phone. I'll admit I brought my phone into the shower once, but it was only to answer a time-sensitive work email. It worked like a charm!

My only issue with this case is the color. I'm a colorful person, but for $70, I wasn't willing to purchase a case I'd grow tired of in a couple of weeks. Black is one of my favorite colors, but now it's extremely hard to find my phone in my giant tote bag! Maybe I'll cover it in rainbow stickers, but that task is for another day.

Overall, I'm pretty pleased with my LifeProof Fre Case. It's comforting to know that the next time I drop my phone into a bowl of soup or get a bucket of paint thrown on me (both of those things have happened and did damage my phone) I'll walk away with my phone in perfect condition. I learned my lesson that I need to be more careful with my phone, and going forward I'll treat it much better, but it's certainly nice to have that extra layer of protection from LifeProof!
