Eats: More Than Just A Diner

July 6, 2015

Yesterday I finally reunited with a few of my college friends.  It was so exciting to see everyone again; the transition from living with these people every day to not seeing them at all has been really rough.  Alana, who lives all the way in Nevada, flew to the East Coast to stay with Katrina for the holiday weekend, so that was super awesome, and we met up with Rachel and George for dinner! I've been hearing a lot about Big Daddy's Diner, which has three locations in NYC (Upper East, Upper West, and Gramercy Park), so we decided to check out the Gramercy Park location.

While Manhattan may be the restaurant capital of the world, I'm always cautious when choosing where to eat.  There's nothing worse than dining at a restaurant that's overpriced, touristy, or just plain dirty.  I was a little worried about the tourist factor with Big Daddy's, but it was actually tourist-free, which was super nice!  The atmosphere of this place is AMAZING.  It's got the classic colorful dining booths, fun signs and banners on the wall, giant television screens, and (my personal favorite) signed photographs of famous people who have dined at Big Daddy's all along the walls.  I got to eat dinner next to an autographed picture of Tom Selleck.  TOM SELLECK, YOU GUYS.  It was a religious experience.

Big Daddy's Diner is known for having an INSANE menu and an exceptional selection of milkshakes (including cotton candy, key lime pie, pancake, and bacon milky way, to name a few).  We wanted to save room for dinner, but we couldn't pass up the opportunity to try one of these shakes.  So, Katrina, Alana, and I decided to share the Birthday Cake Shake.  And it was DELICIOUS.

It came with a candle and all, and it had chunks of vanilla funfetti cake throughout.  It was the perfect treat!

Next, we moved on to appetizers.  Mozzarella sticks have always been a favorite of mine, so I was eager to try Big Daddy's take on this classic snack.  I was very, very impressed.  Not only are their mozzarella sticks MASSIVE, but also they are cooked just right so the cheese isn't too stringy!

As far as mozzarella sticks go, these may have been the best I've ever had.  And that's saying something because I LOVE mozzarella sticks.

When it comes to dining, I have a very "go big or go home" attitude.  If you're gonna order the salad, you might as well not order food at all.  As soon as I glanced at this extensive menu, I knew there was only one option that would be right for me: The Mac Daddy.  This incredible sandwich consists of two perfectly toasted buns, a well-done beef burger, a layer of MACARONI AND CHEESE, and two crispy pieces of BACON.  Yep, you read that right: macaroni and cheese AND bacon on a burger.

This burger was unreal.  It exceeded all of my expectations, and I want to relive that first bite over and over again.  Words can't describe this burger.  Just go and try it for yourself.  Another really cool thing about Big Daddy's is the sides; the burger came with the choice of a side of fries, tater tots, fruit (uhm, no), salad (also, no), onion rings, or sweet potato tots.

Big Daddy's was everything I had hoped for and more.  The ambiance was awesome.  Our waitress (I think her name was Brittany) was SO hilarious and really contributed to the fantastic experience.  The food was delicious and the price was right!! I give Big Daddy's a 10/10, and I'm so excited to go back very very soon!

xo!
