Hi everyone! Hope you are all having a great week. With summer vacation more than half way over (eeeek), and the weather finally starting to warm up, I think I can officially say I am able to dress for summer work days in New York City. For the last 5 weeks, I have been interning at the Tommy Hilfiger headquarters in the Public Relations department. Finding out I landed my dream internship was possibly the most exciting news of my life, but figuring out how to dress the part was a struggle I did not see coming. Here are some tips for how to dress to be noticed!
Before the first day of work, be sure to look at the dress code. This might be common knowledge to most of you, but you would be surprised at how many people skip this easy step. The HR department will usually email this to you a few weeks prior to your start date, so no need to panic the night before! If for some reason you don’t get a dress code, feel free to reach out to your recruiter/HR contact.
Don’t buy too much clothing before your first day! I know it can be tempting to buy 10 new perfect outfits for your dream job, but the best advice I can give you is to wait until after your first day. Look around at what colleagues are wearing, and then go splurge on that dress from Bloomingdales or those shoes from Saks.
On the first day of work, dress on the conservative side. Save the short skirts and sky-high heels for nights out, and stick with longer hemlines. The last thing you want is to start off your internship on the wrong foot.
Here are some stylish and appropriate summer work outfits that I've put together:
Dress: Ann Taylor
Cardigan: J. Crew
Shoes: Kate Spade
Shift dresses will be your best friend for internships in the summer. Whether it’s the hot NYC sun beating down on you as you walk to work or the stuffy subway air making you sweat, shift dresses will allow you to stay cool and won’t stick to you. Simple studs will add a touch of elegance to your look, and short heels will give you that added sense of professionalism (but remember to bring flats in your bag!) To finish of the look, don’t forget to pack a lightweight cardigan, as most office buildings tend to be air-conditioned.
This dress is originally from Ann Taylor, however it's no longer sold online! The shoes are from Dolce Vita. I actually borrowed this whole outfit from my mom. I love the added leather paneling on the sides of the dress, and the gold strap on the sandals really brings the whole look together.
Pants: Banana Republic
Top: Banana Republic
Jacket: Banana Republic
Shoes: Dolce Vita
This is by far one of my favorite outfits! I have experienced quite a few rainy days during my internship, and these pants have quickly become my lazy-day must-have. They feel like sweatpants, but when paired with a leather jacket, they give off a very polished look. Add a plain white tank and a long necklace and you’re set!
Shoes: Tommy Hilfiger
This was actually the outfit I wore to the eff. Y. bee party Sloane and I went to with My Social Canvas a few weeks back. This is the perfect dress to transition from day to night, and the color really pops.
This last outfit is the perfect summer look. The white shift dress and gold sandals will make your tan stand out, and you can never go wrong with a classic brown leather tote.
