Keeping Warm This Winter

February 7, 2015

Up here in Ithaca, this winter has been pretty brutal.  It's such a struggle trying to dress well in the freezing cold temperatures.  But, there's one article of clothing that is PERFECT for these below-zero days: a turtleneck! For whatever reason, turtlenecks have become synonymous with frumpy and matronly, but there are plenty of SUPER STYLISH ways to wear turtlenecks.  Here are a few turtleneck outfits that will keep you warm & fashionable this winter!

This outfit is perfect for a casual day of shopping! I love wearing all black with a little bit of grey, and I've really been incorporating that color scheme in my outfits this winter. I really like this Long Sleeve Ribbed Polo Neck Top ($32.00) from Topshop is so simple and soft.  Dress it up with this Mono Geo Cape (originally $60.00, now $30.00)! Capes are great for the winter because they add a warm layer to your outfit. This cape fits really well, and even though it is definitely flowy, it doesn't appear boxy. For some added bling, find a cute chunky necklace, like this BP. Teardrop Fan Statement Necklace ($24.00). A pair of ripped black jeans, like these MOTO Black Super Ripped Jamie Jeans ($85.00) are perfect for an edgy look.  I've really been into chain booties this season, and I love this 3.1 Phillip Lim Berlin Chain-Strap Ankle Boot (originally $795.00, now $357.00). Chloe's Dilan East-West Leather Tote Bag ($1250.00) and a Floppy Wool Hat by Phase 3 ($32.00) make for the perfect accessories to this sleek and chic outfit!

This outfit is a little on the funkier side.  I really like this Topshop Roll Neck Crop Sweater ($52.00) in Deep Berry. It's is one of my favorite colors this season, and it matches really well with this Anna Sui Printed Bamboo-Twill Skirt ($315.00). If you look really close, you'll notice this skirt is actually printed with cats! It's so adorable and fun.  Since it's cold outside, it's best expose as little skin as possible and pair your mini skirt with over-the-knee boots, like these Alberto Fermani Adria Leather/Suede Boots (originally $695.00, now $520.00).  I'm completely obsessed with this Chanel Lambskin Small Flap Bag With Tray Packaging  ($3,600.00).  This bag is from the famous Chanel Supermarket Fashion Show (F/W 14/15).  Even though this show was almost a year ago, people are still talking about the adorable supermarket-themed accessories that graced the runway!  These bags are going to be HUGE during fashion week. Finish the outfit off with this edgy Alexis Bittar Miss Havisham Multistrand Necklace ($155.00).

Everyone has those days where it's just TOO cold to even think about dressing up. An outfit like this is perfect for those days! This Oscar Cashmere Turtleneck Sweater by Equipment ($320.00) is made of 100% cashmere, which is perfect for a freezing cold day! For extra warmth, add this Tissue Weight Wool & Cashmere Wrap Scarf ($98.00).  It comes in a bunch of different colors, but I really like pairing ivory and grey. Leather leggings are always a must-have, and I really like this pair from Helmut Lang ($920.00). These Vince Berlin Python Skate Shoes ($275.00) are great for a casual day. I love adding pops of color to darker outfits, and this Rebecca Minkoff Avery Saffiano Crossbody Bag ($175.00) has just enough space for all your essentials! Finally, dress up any casual look with some fun bangles! (From top to bottom, Lizzie Fortunato Inca 18k Gold-Plate Cuff Bracelet in Onyx ($195.00), L. Erickson Little Susie Studded Bangle ($68.00), Kate Spade Squared Away Hinge Bracelet ($78.00), Tory Burch Logo Enamel Dipped Cuff ($95.00).)

Here's another trendy turtleneck look! I really like this outfit because it incorporates a lot of patterns. This Topshop Long Sleeve Ribbed Polo Neck Top ($36.00) is tight-fitting, so it's perfect under this Belstaff Waistcoat Quilted Shell Vest ($350.00). I really like that this vest has a high neck for extra warmth and protection! These Paisley Print Leggings ($40.00) are so much fun! This is a great pattern because it's colorful and fun, but it's not overwhelming. Shades, like these Illesteva Hudson 52mm Keyhole Sunglasses, are a necessity for bright winter days. Of course, no outfit is complete with a funky pair of flats, like these Hermione Glitter-Finished Leather Point-Toe Flats ($695.00) by Tabitha Simmons. And, for a finishing touch, add a fun clutch, like this Kotur Merrick Perspex Box Clutch ($895.00).

So turtlenecks are obviously great for everyday wear, but they can even be stylish for fancier events! I stumbled upon this Ribbed Turtleneck Dress ($39.95) from H&M, and now I'm obsessed with it! It's a knee length dress, which looks super chic when paired with over-the-knee boots, like these Alice + Olivia Dae Boots ($795.00).  For even more glamor, add a multi-strand necklace! I like this Bead and Tassel Multi-Row Necklace ($29.00) because it matches the dusty rose color of the dress! Capes are a fun garment that can keep you warm without taking away from the style of your outfit, and I really like this Textured Cape ($99.00) from H&M. No evening outfit is complete without a statement clutch! These clutches are the it-pieces of the season! Net-A-Porter has a ton of great options, but my personal favorite is this Sylvia Toledano X-Pop Girl Swarovski Crystal-Embellished Clutch ($2,165.00).  It also comes in a brown hair/brown eyed option! I really like this clutch because it's fun and whimsical, but still appropriate for evening events!

Turtlenecks are the BEST for staying warm AND trendy this winter!
